Quilt retreats in Utah

A few days with nothing to do but sew is a different thing entirely from an evening squeezed in after work. Here are the retreat centers we can confirm across Utah — where they are, how many they take, and what you actually get.

Stay overnight

Book the whole house with friends, or a room on your own. Most of these take a small group rather than a crowd, which is rather the point.

• Northern Utah Quilt Retreat

  Layton · Davis County

  A distraction-free house at the base of the Wasatch, built for eight quilters, with project walls and a hot tub.

  Semi-secluded in Spanish Fork, with themed bedrooms and eight proper workstations in the sewing room.

Sewing rooms by the day

No beds, but a proper room with space to spread out — good for a guild day or a group who all live locally.

Retreats run by guilds

Several Utah guilds organize their own retreats, which is often the cheapest way to go on one — and the easiest if you don't yet have a group of your own to book with. You'll usually need to be a member, but dues are modest.

What to ask before you book

Retreat centers vary more than their photographs suggest, and a few questions up front save disappointment:

• Is the whole house yours? Some places take one group at a time; others let rooms individually, which is cheaper but means sharing with strangers.
• What's in the sewing room? Individual workstations with their own power, cutting tables at the right height, ironing stations, and design walls make a real difference over two or three days.
• Are machines provided? Most expect you to bring your own. Ask about table sizes if you sew on something large.
• Food. A fully stocked kitchen you cook in is very different from catered meals, and both are different again from being twenty minutes from the nearest shop.
• How late can you sew? If the sewing room closes at ten, say, that changes the character of the trip.
