Where to buy apparel fabric in Utah
Start with Salt Lake Sewciety in Salt Lake City or Harmony in Provo for documented apparel-fabric selections. Fabric Center in West Jordan is a general-sewing option to call for specific materials. Choose by your pattern’s needs—not just the word “fabric” on the storefront.
This is a focused buying guide, not a complete census of Utah apparel retailers. A documented catalog category does not guarantee today’s stock, a particular fiber blend, or enough continuous yardage. Quilt-shop cotton can work for some structured garments, but it is not an automatic substitute for a pattern calling for a drapey woven or stretch knit. Finished clothing for sale is not evidence of apparel yardage.

Match the fabric to the pattern
For a T-shirt or leggings, do not assume all knits stretch equally or return to their original shape equally well. Compare the pattern’s stretch test with the actual fabric. A woven trouser pattern and a stretch-jeans pattern can need very different denim, even when the finished garments look similar.
For shirts, dresses and skirts, fiber name alone is not enough. Cotton lawn, denim and quilting cotton can all be cotton but have very different weights and drape. Likewise, a linen blend may behave differently from pure linen. Hold the cloth up, check opacity, and compare it with the silhouette you want before committing to a cut.
Utah apparel-fabric stores by city
Salt Lake City: Salt Lake Sewciety
Salt Lake Sewciety is the city-proper apparel specialist in this guide, at 1185 S 300 W in the Ballpark neighborhood. Its catalog includes denim and activewear, plus garment patterns and sewing supplies. Published listings also include linen and cotton-linen fabrics; check the current selection rather than expecting a specific listing to remain available.
The shop’s official FAQ distinguishes its apparel focus from quilting cotton, special-occasion and interior-design fabrics, which it says it does not carry. Sewing classes and PDF printing make this a useful place to discuss a garment project as well as buy cloth. Fabric is sold in half-yard units: two yards requires four units. Older product pickup text may show the former address; use the current FAQ and confirm any conflicting pickup instructions.
Use the Salt Lake City shopping guide for city-specific planning or the Salt Lake County directory for the wider valley. Murray and West Jordan are separate cities, not additional Salt Lake City locations.
Provo: Harmony
Harmony, at 275 E Center Street, is a useful Utah County starting point for comparing multiple apparel materials in one trip. Its apparel catalog separates garment fabrics from quilting cotton, with linen and hemp, knits and swim, denim, lawn, gauze, poplin, rayon and crepe among the categories.
Its online navigation also separates clothing patterns by garment type and lists sewing notions such as interfacing, needles, thread and zippers. Bring your pattern and work through the supplies together. For machine help during the same outing, compare the separate dealer in the Provo guide. Use the current Center Street address, not the older 315 E Center listing.
West Jordan: Fabric Center
Fabric Center is a broader general-sewing stop at 9135 S Redwood Road. Its official company information describes a fabric, trim and notion business; it does not provide enough detail to mark every apparel material in the comparison as confirmed stock here.
Call 801-561-8726 with the material, fiber, stretch and yardage you need. Ask specifically about garment-weight linen, knit jersey or denim rather than simply asking whether the store has fabric. The official store page lists hours through 7 p.m. Monday–Saturday; reconfirm holiday hours. The West Jordan guide also covers nearby quilting-focused stops.
Elsewhere in Utah
For northern, eastern, central or southern Utah, use the city directory to find nearby shops, then ask about your exact garment material. We have not established equivalent full apparel ranges in every city. A local quilt shop may help with thread or tools without stocking dressmaking fabric. Online ordering from the apparel specialists can be worth comparing with a long drive; check swatches, shipping and cut-fabric return policies first.
Buy the pattern and notions as a complete project
Choose the pattern size using its measurement chart before buying yardage. Check finished garment measurements and intended ease, then use the yardage column for the actual fabric width. A PDF purchase does not necessarily include printed sheets; ask about copy-shop file size, scale, turnaround and fees before using a printing service.
- Stretch garments: bring the elastic width and length, any lining or ribbing requirements, and the pattern’s stretch specification.
- Shirts and dresses: check buttons, zipper type and length, interfacing, lining and thread against the supply list.
- Jeans and jackets: ask about compatible needles, topstitching thread, closures and any installation tools; confirm your machine can handle the planned seam layers.
- Classes: check the level and supply list in advance. The Utah sewing-class directory includes several kinds of instruction, not only garment classes.
Before fabric is cut
- Bring the pattern’s fabric recommendations, size, yardage chart and notions list.
- Confirm fiber content, width, weight, stretch, opacity and care instructions.
- Ask how much extra is needed for shrinkage, directional prints, plaid matching or a test garment. Do not assume one fixed allowance fits every fabric.
- Check that the required yardage is available as one continuous cut, and verify whether the price is per yard or per half yard.
- Read cut-goods return terms before paying. Follow the fabric’s care instructions when preparing it for cutting.
Looking for other former big-box sewing departments? The Utah JOANN alternatives guide also covers quilting supplies, machines, repair and classes. Use the shop-hop planner after confirming inventory and hours.
