Fabric stores in St. George, Utah

A town this size supporting five fabric and quilt shops is a delightful anomaly, and the explanation comes down to who spends the winter here.

The Dixie Quilt Guild was founded in 1983 and has grown to roughly 300 members — about half of them full-time southern Utah residents, the other half part-time residents and snowbirds who arrive as the rest of the country freezes. That second group is what keeps the shops thriving. It means the season here peaks in January rather than July, and it means shopkeepers stock for people who quilt seriously and finally have the time to do it. The guild meets the second Saturday of most months and runs workshops through the year, and if you’re new in town it’s far and away the warmest way in — members are quick to fold newcomers into the group.

There’s one more thing worth knowing: Superior Threads is headquartered right here. The thread sitting on shelves in quilt shops across the country is made in St. George, and its retail fabric arm operates in town. For a lot of visiting quilters, that alone is reason enough for the trip.

Making a day of it

The shops sit close enough together that you can comfortably visit all of them in a single day — something you can’t really say for Salt Lake or Utah County. Most are just minutes from the historic downtown grid, so it’s easy to break the morning up with lunch at Ancestor Square or a wander through the art district. Historic Downtown doubles as the city’s gallery district, with the restored Electric Theater and the Tabernacle a couple of blocks away.

Two gentle bits of planning. Nearly every shop here closes on Sunday, and most close by five or six on weekdays, so a late-afternoon start will cut your day short. And if you’re visiting in summer, go in the morning — a St. George July afternoon is better spent somewhere air-conditioned, and the shopkeepers will be the first to tell you so.

A little further afield

Worth adding to the loop: Clover Patch Quilt Shop is about ten minutes up the road in Santa Clara and pairs beautifully with a drive through Snow Canyon. If you’re making a longer trip of it, Cedar City is roughly an hour north.
