Fabric stores in Orem, Utah

Two shops with quite different characters — one big and broadly stocked with an unusually good novelty print selection, the other class-focused with short, early-closing hours worth planning around.

Fabric shopping in Orem

Orem is an easy stop, and it sits in the middle of the densest stretch of fabric shops in Utah County — with Provo just south, Pleasant Grove and American Fork just north, everything is within about twenty minutes.

The Fabric Mill is the larger of the two shops here and the one to head for if you want choice: cotton and designer cotton, a big minky range, flannels, fleece and bamboo batting. Its real distinction is novelty prints — noticeably more for boys, men and hobbyists than the average quilt shop, which tends to stock deeply for florals and thinly for everything else.

American Quilting is the smaller, class-focused shop, running quilting, craft and cross-stitch sessions through the week.

One thing to plan around

American Quilting closes at four, Monday to Saturday. That’s earlier than almost anything else in the valley, so visit it first and work outward. The Fabric Mill runs until six.

Nearby

Provo is ten minutes south and worth pairing with a trip here — Harmony in particular carries apparel fabric and indie patterns, which nothing in Orem does. Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Springville and Payson are all within reach — see the full Utah County list.
