Common finished quilt sizes, the mattress each is meant for, and the batting packages sold to match. Treat these as a practical starting point rather than a rule—how far you want the quilt to hang changes everything.

Batting package sizes
Batting is commonly sold in these cuts, but dimensions vary by manufacturer and product. For longarm quilting, many providers want about four extra inches on every side.

Why the numbers vary
Look up quilt sizes in three places and you'll get three answers, which is confusing until you realize there's no standard to disagree about. A quilt size is really a decision about drop, how far it hangs down the sides of the mattress, and that's a matter of taste.
A quilt meant to sit on top of a made bed with pillows in front of it can be considerably smaller than one meant to hang to the floor. If you want a specific drop, the arithmetic is simple: mattress width + (2 × drop) for the width, and mattress length + drop for the length, adding a bit more if you want it to tuck over the pillows.
Mattress depths vary too. A pillow-top can be six inches deeper than a basic mattress, which eats six inches of drop before you've started.
