How to enter a quilt in the 2026 Utah State Fair
The 2026 Fair runs September 10–20, but quilt entries arrive the week before. Choose your Fiber Arts division and class, register the entry, label the quilt, and take it to the Pioneer Building September 3–5. This guide separates the regular quilt competition from the limited annual Quilt Challenge so you do not prepare for the wrong event.

The Fairpark address is 155 North 1000 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116. Fiber Arts is in the Pioneer Building. Entries cannot be removed before the release dates, and the Fair states that entries left after September 22 become its property.
Who can enter
The 2026 Fiber Arts rules set four important eligibility tests:
- The exhibitor must be a legal Utah resident or a military or student resident of Utah.
- The quilt must be the exhibitor’s own work and entered in that person’s name.
- The work must have been completed during the past two years.
- A quilt previously entered in the Utah State Fair cannot be entered again.
Divisions are professional, adult age 18 and older, senior age 65 and older, youth age 17 and younger, and special artist. The Fair defines a professional as someone with a high level of proficiency who receives compensation—for example, by selling work or teaching. Do not choose two divisions for the same section and class.
Entry fees and awards
The 2026 fee per Fiber Arts entry is $5 for professional, $3 for adult, and $2 for senior, youth, or special artist. First- through third-place premiums vary by division, and fourth place receives a ribbon. The department also lists Best of Show, Grand Prize, People’s Choice, and Supervisor’s Choice awards, although an award is never guaranteed simply because a class has few entries.
An exhibitor may enter as many as four items under one class number and may enter multiple classes. If several of your entries compete in one class, only the highest-placing one can earn a premium; additional entries may receive ribbons at the judge’s discretion.
How to enter a quilt
- Open the current Fiber Book. Find the quilting section and select the class that most accurately describes the quilt. “Miscellaneous” is only for work that cannot fit another listed class.
- Choose the correct division. Use the Fair’s definitions for professional, adult, senior, youth, and special artist rather than choosing only by experience level.
- Register and pay the entry fee. Record the department, division, section, and class so the physical entry and registration agree.
- Label the back. The Fair requires the exhibitor’s name, email, and phone number on the back lower-right corner of the entry.
- Deliver the quilt during intake. Take it to the Pioneer Building September 3–5 during the published hours. Do not take a Fiber Arts entry to the Fine Arts building.
- Keep the pickup dates. Retrieve the quilt September 21 or 22 during the stated release hours.
If you need to mail the quilt
Mailed Competitive Arts entries must arrive by August 28. Send the package prepaid to Utah State Fair, Attn: Comp Art Entry, 155 N. 1000 W., Salt Lake City, UT 84116. Include a copy of the paid registration receipt, clear item labeling, return instructions, and return shipping funds. Pack for the return trip as carefully as the trip to Salt Lake City.
Quilt preparation checklist
- Confirm the quilt is finished, clean, pressed if appropriate, and free of pet hair or odor.
- Inspect binding, hanging elements, embellishments, and loose threads before intake.
- Verify the division and class number against the 2026 Fiber Book.
- Attach the required contact label to the back lower-right corner.
- Photograph the quilt and label before leaving it.
- Save the registration receipt and note the September 21–22 pickup window.
- Read the general rules, including the Fair’s limits on responsibility for entry damage.
The separate 2026 Quilt Challenge
The Utah State Fair Quilt Challenge is not the general quilting division. To enter the 2026 challenge, a maker must have purchased the designated fat quarter during the 2025 Fair and bring the receipt. The Fair says the 2026 challenge fabric is sold out. Challenge quilts have their own instructions, a $3 adult or junior department fee, and Zion Building intake. Mailed challenge entries must arrive at the Fairpark office by August 30. In-person intake runs September 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and September 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Late entries are not accepted.
If you did not buy that fabric last year, enter an eligible quilt through the regular Fiber Arts classes instead. If you want to try a future challenge, visit this year’s Fair and check the official competition information while supplies are available.
Visiting the quilt display
The Fiber Arts exhibit is open during the September 10–20 Fair and requires Fair admission. Public People’s Choice voting is scheduled for September 10–13, with the award placed on September 14. Check the official Fair schedule and ticket page before traveling because building hours, promotions, parking, and gate policies can differ by day.
