Fat quarter and precut fabric sizes
A fat quarter is usually about 18″ × 21″, a charm square is 5″ × 5″, a layer cake square is 10″ × 10″, and a jelly roll strip is 2½″ × the width of fabric. Those familiar names describe shapes, not guaranteed bundle counts. Check the product label before choosing a pattern or calculating how many bundles to buy.
Before washing any small cut, read the quilt-fabric prewashing guide. Precuts and kits have different size and fraying risks from ordinary yardage.

Layer Cake, Jelly Roll, Charm Pack, Honey Bun, and Jolly Bar are branded product names. Other manufacturers sell comparable shapes under names such as 10-inch Stackers, 5-inch Stackers, Rolie Polies, Roll Ups, and standard 5-inch or 10-inch squares. Match the dimensions and count required by the pattern rather than relying only on the nickname.

How precuts compare with yardage
Area equivalence can help compare price, but it does not make different shapes interchangeable. The approximate figures below use a nominal 42-inch fabric width. Selvages, pinked edges, irregular cuts, and pattern geometry reduce usable yield.

Four fat quarters are therefore about one yard by area, but a pattern calling for one continuous yard may still be impossible to cut from them. Conversely, a fat quarter can produce larger rectangles in the crosswise direction than a traditional 9-inch quarter-yard strip. Shape is the reason fat quarters exist.
Common square yields from one fat quarter
These are simple grid layouts from a full nominal 18″ × 21″ cut. “Finished size” assumes ¼-inch seams on all four sides. Do not rely on the maximum when the cut is undersized or must be squared substantially.

Fat quarters, precuts, or yardage?
Choose fat quarters when:
- The pattern is written for fat quarters or needs medium-size pieces from many prints.
- You want a coordinated collection without buying long cuts of every fabric.
- The pieces fit within the usable fat-quarter rectangle after squaring.
Choose square or strip precuts when:
- The pattern names that exact size and count.
- You value consistent factory cutting and a broad sampling of a collection.
- The design uses the supplied shape efficiently enough to justify the per-area price.
Choose continuous yardage when:
- You need borders, binding strips, sashing, backing panels, or large uninterrupted pieces.
- A directional print, stripe, or repeat must be aligned.
- You need control over how many pieces are cut from each color or print.
- The pattern was designed for yardage and substituting precuts would create waste.

Before buying a precut bundle
- Read the exact piece count; 42 squares and 40 strips are common, not guaranteed.
- Check whether the bundle contains every print once, duplicates, solids, or omitted prints.
- Confirm whether a pattern requires background fabric, borders, binding, or backing separately.
- Find out how the manufacturer measures pinked edges and follow the pattern’s sewing guidance.
- Do not assume two brands’ similarly named products have identical dimensions or counts.
- Buy all required bundles together when collection, color, or availability matters.

Fat quarter and precut questions
What size is a fat quarter of fabric?
A quilting-cotton fat quarter is commonly about 18 by 21 inches. A half yard is cut across the fabric’s width and then divided in half, producing two wider rectangles instead of two long 9-inch strips. Actual usable dimensions can be smaller after selvages, crooked edges, or prewashing are considered.
Do four fat quarters equal one yard of fabric?
Four fat quarters contain approximately the same total area as one yard of the same fabric width, but they are four separate rectangles rather than one continuous cut. They cannot always replace a yard when a pattern needs full-width strips, long borders, large pieces, matched repeats, or directional cutting.
How many 5-inch squares can you cut from a fat quarter?
Twelve 5-inch squares fit in a nominal 18-by-21-inch fat quarter using a three-by-four layout. Verify the actual cut before planning: a slightly undersized piece, selvage, prewashing, or squaring can reduce the yield. Twelve 5-inch cut squares finish at 4.5 inches when sewn with quarter-inch seams on all sides.
How many squares are in a charm pack?
Many manufacturer charm packs and similar 5-inch-square bundles contain 42 pieces, but the count can vary by manufacturer, collection, and product. Read the package or product listing instead of treating 42 as universal.
What size are layer cake squares?
Moda Layer Cake squares and comparable products are nominally 10 by 10 inches. Many bundles contain 42 pieces, but counts vary. With quarter-inch seams on all four sides, an untrimmed 10-inch square finishes at 9.5 inches in a simple grid.
What size are jelly roll strips?
Moda Jelly Roll strips and comparable roll-ups are nominally 2.5 inches by the width of fabric. Forty strips is common, but the strip count and fabric width can vary. Strips may have pinked edges, and the collection may contain duplicates.
Should precut fabric be prewashed?
Small precuts are usually not prewashed because exposed edges can fray, distort, and lose usable size. Follow the fabric and pattern instructions. If precuts will be combined with prewashed yardage, consider whether different shrinkage could affect the project and test when the result matters.

Riley Blake’s current specifications list 42 pieces for many 5-inch and 10-inch Stackers and 40 pieces for Rolie Polies; Fat Quarter Shop likewise notes that counts vary by collection. The calculator uses nominal source dimensions, adds ½ inch to the finished square for seam allowances, and rounds every block, cut, and bundle count up.
Best rule: the package label and chosen pattern control. Measure actual fabric before cutting, especially when the plan depends on the maximum possible yield.
