Fabric stores in Moab, Utah

One shop, and a genuinely good one — over 3,000 bolts with an exceptional run of western, native and batik prints, tucked into a business park south of town rather than on Main Street.

Buying fabric in Moab

Moab is far from any other fabric shop in Utah, which makes Canyonland Quilts something of a relief for anyone who lives here or arrives mid-project.

It’s better than it needs to be. Behind an unremarkable frontage sit more than 3,000 bolts, and the selection has a strong sense of place — Cheryl, who runs it, is repeatedly praised for her eye for western and native-themed prints and batiks. If you’ve come down for the red rock and want to take some of that color home as cloth, this is the shop. There are usually fresh cookies too.

Get the address right. Several directories, including this site until recently, listed Canyonland Quilts at 82 South Main Street. That’s wrong — that address belongs to a shop in Blanding, two hours south. Canyonland is on Highway 191, south of town in a business park.

Making a day of it

The shop sits conveniently between Arches and Canyonlands, so it slots into a park day without much detour. Moab in summer is punishingly hot by mid-afternoon, which makes an air-conditioned hour among the bolts more appealing than it might sound.

This is the only shop in Grand County. The nearest others are a long way off — Richfield is about three hours west.

The local guild

Often the quickest way to meet other quilters — and to hear about retreats and workshops that never get advertised.
